What is CSR?
You might have heard the term “Corporate Social Responsibility” used in advertisements, or seen it placed on the back of products. The term is used broadly in marketing by businesses to denote some type of “social good” initiative from within the company. The United Nations defines it as “a management concept whereby companies integrate social and environmental concerns in their business operations and interactions with their stakeholders."1
Why do companies do CSR?
There are many benefits to integrating CSR practices into a business. Firstly, it can strengthen stakeholder relationships. Individuals purchasing a good or service from a company with CSR practices not only receive a transactional benefit, but they also contribute to helping society. In fact, 89% of Americans would switch to brands that are associated with good causes, given similar prices and quality.2 Employees who work for companies with CSR practices have greater job satisfaction, knowing their work makes a positive impact on their community. Investors of such companies can anticipate greater longevity of success from companies that promote the economic growth and well-being of their region through addressing environmental and social concerns.
Secondly, it can promote more sustainable and innovative business practices. Businesses that increasingly strive to reduce their environmental impact often find creative ways to reduce waste, which benefits both the environment and their bottom line. Businesses that strive to have a positive social impact on their community can find new ways to mobilize community members, and strengthen community relationships in a way that supports social and fiscal infrastructure.
